San Blas in next door Nayarit

San Blas, in the neighboring state of Nayarit is located on the Pacific coast, 62 km (38 mi) northwest of Tepic, the state capital. It has a pleasant tropical climate, with an average year-round temperature of 22º C (72º F). This destination is known for its natural beauty and its rich culture and history. Historic events that have taken place in the city include colonial conquests, pirate invasions and battles for Mexico’s independence. Among the main tourist attractions here are the quiet beaches with calm waters and lush tropical jungle vegetation, which is the habitat of a large population of bird species.

ECOTOURISM

In San Blas and its surrounding areas there are various places where you can observe flora and fauna or go on photo safaris while you enjoy a peaceful walk along nature trails.

La Tobara, located in the city of San Blas, 2 km (1.2 mi) from the port. Freshwater and salt water come together here to form a river with lagoons and navigable estuary canals. This is the ideal location to observe such plant species as lilies, orchids, fig trees and ferns. As for animals, you’ll see herons, cormorants, parakeets, parrots, doves and turtledoves, among other species. Open daily from 8:00 to 6:00.

Parque Nacional Isla Isabel (Isabel Island National Park). Lies 74 km (46 mi) northwest of San Blas by boat. This is one of Mexico’s most important ecological reserves, thanks to its biodiversity. It’s also the breeding grounds of diverse marine birds, including frigate birds, booby birds, the red-billed tropicbird and seagulls, among other species.

Isla de Mexcaltitan (Mexcaltitan Island). Located 90 km (56 mi) south of San Blas, off Highway 54. This is a great place to observe birds throughout the year, particularly in the winter. It is home to such species as herons, kingfishers, black-bellied whistling ducks and egrets, among others.

La Bajada. Located 25 km (15 mi) south of San Blas. This singular town offers countless sites to observe birds and enjoy photo safaris.

La Manzanilla. Located 20 km (14 mi) southeast of San Blas, off Highway 54. The lowland jungle vegetation here makes it the ideal place to observe plant and animal species or go on a photo safari.

FISHING

In San Blas and at its nearby beaches you can catch such species as Dorado, Sailfish and Marlin.

Miramar, 20 km (14 mi) southeast of San Blas, off Highway 54. Here you can hook tilapia, snapper, sierra and bass. Puerto de San Blas. Located between the city center and the coast of San Blas, also good for catching as Dorado, Sailfish and Marlin.

SURFING

San Blas’ beaches are ideal for hitting the surf, especially during the summer months when the waves are much bigger.

Bahia de Matanchen (Matanchen Bay). Located 7 km (4 mi) south of the port of San Blas, off Highway 54. This is an ideal surf spot, as the waves can reach up to six feet.

Los Cocos. Located 14 km (9 mi) southeast of San Blas, off Highway 54. This is a beach with moderate waves and numerous coconut trees. The beach is known for its constant breaks, making it the perfect surfing destination.

Las Islitas. Lies 15 km (9 mi) southeast of San Blas. Considered one of the area’s best surfing locations, particularly in May and June when the waves are much bigger.

El Borrego. Located 2 km (1.2 mi) south of San Blas. This beach is famous for its big waves, which provide optimal surfing conditions.
